The 5th seeded Emmanuel Women's Tennis Team upset the 4th seeded Lions of Emerson College, 5-4, in last night's GNAC quarterfinal match. The Saints traveled to Weymouth, MA to take on Emerson on the indoor courts at the Weymouth Club. Emmanuel won 3 of the 6 singles matches and 2 of the 3 doubles matches to take the win. The deciding match fell on the shoulders of senior captain Jamie Kenyon (Ware, MA) and sophomore Nory Hayes (Newport, RI) as they battled for the victory at 2nd doubles. All other matches were complete and the team score was knotted at 4-4. Kenyon and Hayes trailed, 7-2, but came back to win six-straight games to take an 8-7 lead. Emerson won the next game and tied the score at 8-8, but Kenyon and Hayes outlasted the Lions and won in a tiebreaker to give Emmanuel the 5-4 win. Senior Anna Marie Podnecky (Bridgewater Corners, VT) defeated her opponent at 1st singles, 6-3 and 7-6. Senior Cat Robinson (East Providence, RI) won at 4th singles, 6-2 and 6-2. Freshman Catherine Dunphy (Duxbury, MA) gave the Saints their only other singles win with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at 5th singles. Emmanuel's other doubles victory came by way of sophomore Caitrin Dunn (Toms River, NJ) and senior Megan Barrows (West Springfield, MA), with a 9-7 nail-biter at 3rd doubles. The Saints had lost to the Lions, 5-4, earlier this season, but battled back to take the win in the post-season. The 9-5 Saints will now take on the 1st seeded Rams of Suffolk University on Saturday (10/27) in the GNAC semifinal match. This match will be played at 1:00 pm at Buckingham, Browne & Nichols.
The Women's Soccer Team (14-2-2) earned the top seed in the upcoming GNAC Tournament. The Saints will host the 8th seeded Blue Jays of Saint Joseph College (CT) in the quarterfinal round. Emmanuel defeated Saint Joseph, 2-0, earlier this season. This first round game will be played on Saturday (10/27) at 12:00 pm at the Winsor School Field.
