The Emmanuel Women's Soccer Team wrapped up the most successful season in program history on Saturday with a 3-1 loss to Tufts University in the opening round of the NCAA Regionals. The Saints traveled to Clinton, NY to battle the Tufts Jumbos on the home field of host Hamilton College. Emmanuel took an early lead on a goal by freshman forward Amber Di Nucci (Assonet, MA), her 18th of the season, at 35:30. Despite being out-shot 12-1, the Saints held on to this lead for the remainder of the first half and took a 1-0 advantage into halftime. The Jumbos struck back at 66:36 and tied the game at 1-1. The game-winner for Tufts came just 4 minutes later, when the Jumbos took a 2-1 lead. The Jumbos netted just one more goal to seal the 3-1 win at 74:26. Emmanuel's junior goalkeeper Laureyn Furtney (Barrington, NH) made 10 saves in her 90 minutes in net for the Saints. Furtney concluded the season with an amazing 14-3-2 record.
The Saints finished the season with an incredible record of 17 wins, 3 losses, and 2 ties. The 2007 squad smashed the previous program record for wins in a season, which dated back to the 12 wins in 2003. The Saints stormed through the Great Northeast Athletic Conference, going undefeated in conference play (12-0-1) for the first time ever. Prior to Saturday's loss, Emmanuel had gone 16 games without a defeat. The Saints also held an 11-game win streak at one point during the season. Four Emmanuel players earned individual all-conference honors. Senior Erin Kelly (Springfield, MA), sophomore Kate McKenna (Holyoke, MA), and freshman Amber Di Nucci (Assonet, MA) were selected to the first team, while junior defender Tully Nicholas (Granby, CT) earned second team honors. Di Nucci, who finished 2nd in the GNAC in scoring, was also voted the conference's Rookie of the Year.
